As a gift for Trapper on Father’s Day, I tried to pose the three girls together for a picture for his office. We tried and tried to get everyone (mainly Lucy) to look at the camera, and this was our best result. The girl just doesn’t like to sit still. :) But it’s a great example of each of their personalities right now: Hannah posed and ready, Lucy in your face and crazy, and June looking around, most likely asking, “What am I getting into here?”

Summer 2009

Summer 2009

We took our first trip out as a family of five to our favorite diner for breakfast this morning. We did pretty well, but we’ll have to figure out a new plan when June no longer fits on the floor under the booth in her carseat.

The girls are having a nice, albeit wet, beginning to the summer. I can’t tell yet whether Boston is truly more mild in the summer than Chicago, or if we’ve just had some uncharacteristic storms. Hannah finished preschool last week. She really enjoyed her time in the “Monkey Room” and made some good friends. She’ll be going back to the same school next year. She has spent the past two days combing her hair constantly with a comb she won at Chuck E. Cheese. She also has an odd habit of narrating her life in the third person. For example, when Trapper set her plate down in front of her last night, she said, “At last, it was time for Hannah’s dinner.” Not sure what that’s about.

Lucy is her same crazy self these days – and she’s excited that her birthday is coming this week. Or as she calls it, “BerDAY!” when she’ll be “TWO!” (said while holding up one finger). She is talking more and more each day – although I’m usually the only one who understands what she is saying. We’re hoping for some nice weather so we can go to the beach for a birthday celebration.

June is getting CHUBBY which is so fun to see. She’s been smiling at us more and more, and watches us from her perch in the bouncer on the counter. This is the only place we can put her without Lucy endangering her eyesight with “pokes”. She continues to be a good baby, which we are so thankful for.

Today we celebrate our awesome Daddy who does silly dances and takes us to the park while sneaking us donuts and smoothies. He works super hard, but plays hard too. Which is something Mom hopes we learn from him.

We also wish Happy Father’s Day to Grandpa McNulty and Gramps in Alaska! Hope it’s a fun one!

We are all finally home and settling in at the Markelz household! I’m typing this with one hand while feeding June – I forgot how many things I can do one-handed!

June decided Wednesday would be the day. I started having contractions around 2am, and by 5am it was time to wake up Trapper and tell him this was the real deal. Our wonderful neighbor, Beth, came over to watch Hannah and Lucy, and by 7am we were in the car fighting rush hour traffic to the hospital. We laughed how everyone around us was on his or her regular trip to work – sipping coffee, listening to the news – while we were about to have a baby!

The day unfolded pretty normally. It’s so much more calm the 3rd time around. The pushing was definitely hardest this time though – and we soon found out why: June was 8lbs 4.5oz! Our biggest baby by far!

The next two days were boring for me and hectic for everyone else. I sat in the hospital resting, catching brief moments of alertness from sleepy June amongst hours of bad daytime TV. Trapper ran back and forth visiting me, taking care of the girls, and handling the house. We are SO very lucky to have such wonderful neighbors and friends to spend time with Hannah and Lucy while we took care of June.

June and I came home on Friday and the girls were so excited. Hannah keeps saying, “She’s SO cute!” over and over again. She’s also a little annoyed that her arrival has messed up our usual routines. It will be nice for her when preschool starts up again on Wednesday and she can have some time to do things she likes to do. Lucy is a very loving big sister. She shows great concern when June is crying and runs to say hello to her over and over again all day. It’s a little challenging to keep Lucy from poking her eyes or being too rough, but she’s learning.

And little June-Bug? She’s a pretty good baby so far! Lots of sleeping, with more alert time each day. She likes sleeping on mom or dad’s chest and loves our trips in the stroller. It will be so fun to see her little personality emerge. For now, she’s a little warm bundle sleeping in the corner. Which is fine by us, because we’re tired!

Waiting backstage at her recital.

Waiting backstage at her recital.

Trapper and I attended Hannah’s dance recital yesterday. It was an hour and a half of little four, five, and six year olds prancing about on a huge stage – with some pretty comic results. Each performance had the usual confusion: one kid directing another where to go, another just standing there staring at the audience. There were a couple of really funny kids who just rocked out to their own routine while their class dutifully plied and pirouetted. Hannah’s group was about half way through and they did a great job – even managed the tricky “two choo-choo’s” midsection where they were to line up in two trains. This had become a problem when they were all dressed up in the same costume – no one could find their partner!

Hannah was completely unflustered by being on stage – she looked perfectly comfortable. And she was so very excited to get her dance medal afterward. I don’t know if she will choose to do ballet again next year – she’s expressed interest in gymnastics, soccer, and karate and we’re pretty set on just one activity per school year. But she definitely loved ballet class and the performance. She sure feels like a big kid now!

Still waiting on Baby June. Each night I have contractions and wonder if this will be the day, but then they fade away when I go to sleep. I’m now within a week of my due date (the 25th) so it can truly be any day now. And I’ve run out of projects to do around the house – so I’m ready!

Hannah had her dress rehearsal for her ballet recital this morning. This is the only performance we could tape. It was pretty hilarious to watch. See for yourself!

We put the finishing touches on the nursery this morning. While we had pretty much everything we needed, we still had to find it all, clean it all, and put it all together. Plus, we had never really decorated this room since we found out we were pregnant not long after we moved here. I made the paper mobile and wall decorations – a project I had been meaning to do for a long time.

The girls are excited. Lucy points to the items in the room and says “June” – but we know she really has no idea what that means. Hannah’s going to be a much bigger help this time around, I’m sure. I’ve been having contractions all week, but nothing regular yet. I remember being similarly uncomfortable with Lucy. Went to the doctor yesterday – they said probably sometime in the next week and a half, judging by the fact that both other girls came a week early. That’s fine by me – I’m very done with being pregnant.

We just spent a nice long morning at the park – Hannah spends the entire time on the swings (she’s learned to pump by herself) and Lucy is devoted to the slide which she goes down “on belly!” She’s quite the daredevil and we have to make sure she doesn’t take a jump off the highest platforms. But it’s pretty darn cute when the two of them do the giant slide over and over again holding hands. We are quite the spectacle these days – two busy girls, a very big mom, and a dad toting a very big coffee.

I’m off to be spoiled for the evening. Trapp is putting me up in a hotel for the night as a Mother’s Day gift. Sleep, no children, and my Kindle….what could be better? Just hope June doesn’t decide tonight’s the night!

Had quite a scare today. While getting the girls into the van after Hannah’s ballet class, Lucy darted out behind me, and into oncoming traffic. There were cars coming both directions, and I charged after her as fast as I could (in my huge pregnant state). In the end, the only way to prevent her getting hit by a car was for me to do a diving tackle – throwing us both to the ground. Luckily, we were both okay – just a little scraped up from the pavement. And the baby’s doing fine – been moving well all afternoon. But holy bajeezus did she scare the crap out of me! This was one of those situations where you spend hours afterwards stressing out about what could have happened.

Hannah went through a running phase when she was around two years old. Looks like Lucy’s there as well. Perfect timing, right? Just so thankful everyone’s fine and I’ll be using the stroller for everything from now on – until I can figure out a humane way to put a leash on a child. Someday when she’s older and I need a favor, I’ll bring up today as a reason she owes me. Bigtime.

We were all ready to have Hannah’s birthday on Saturday, but she was sick! We’re still unsure what the problem was exactly- may have just been nerves and excitement- but since Lucy had had the stomach bug last week, we cancelled the party. We were able to reschedule today and she had a great time. She was very excited to wear her “rose dress”, have princess balloons, and chocolate cake. All three requests were filled. We’re so lucky to have a nice group of friends and neighbors here in Boston to help us celebrate these moments.

I’ve got to say, it says a lot about the good nature Hannah displays that she didn’t let the party being cancelled get her down. She dwelled on it for about 15 minutes, and then moved on and really enjoyed her day. That kind of attitude will get her far in life.

With this big event finished, we can focus on preparations for the baby! I’m definitely ready to be done being pregnant – it’s hard to get comfortable in any position and I’m not sleeping well. All we have to do is paint the crib (the girls have done a number on the railings during their teething stages) and get that first package of diapers & emergency formula. I’m 36 weeks this week, and both girls were born at 39 weeks, so it’s time to get ready!

Hannah turns 4!

Hannah turns 4!

Hannah celebrated her 4th birthday today! She’s having her official “King & Queen” Party on Saturday with kids from the neighborhood, so today was a fun celebration at home. She woke up to all the presents that have been arriving in the mail this week (the benefit of living far away!). Next was a birthday breakfast of blueberry pancakes. We ran some errands this morning to prepare for her party, then came back home. Since Lucy’s still recovering from her bout with the stomach flu, she took a long midday nap while Hannah and I had a tea party with her fancy new tea set. (Lucy’s new word, by the way – tea SET!) We also colored her new animal pictures, put together a giant floor puzzle, and spent a lot of time with the Little Einstein’s laptop. Later, we picked up dad for dinner at Full Moon. Pretty awesome day for a 4 year old – there were even mystery flowers waiting for her when she got home! (I suspect our neighbors, but we’ll find out tomorrow.)

It seems like Hannah’s personality has jumped about 5 years with the onset of this one. She’s got SO much to say. Every store clerk we encountered today was given the entire story of how “Yesterday I was 3, but NOW I’m 4! And I’m having a KING AND QUEEN party on Saturday with a UNICORN PINATA!” She also likes to correct our accuracy with the phrase, “Actually…” and today told me not to say the word “butt” because it isn’t polite. “We don’t NEED to use that word, mom.” This may cause trouble for us – she described who she was talking to yesterday afternoon as “that man with not much hair on his head”. Oops.

As Trapper and I approach being outnumbered by our children, we are taking back our personal URL’s for ourselves. We may not be able to set our coffee cup down where we we like or use the bathroom alone, but at least we’ll have virtual personal space. Thus the creation of markelzfamily.com. Here we can keep family up to date with the kiddos. My personal site will be used to chronicle the work I’m doing at school, and Trapper…well I’m sure sci-fi will be involved.

Things aren’t set up exactly as I’d like, but it’s a start. This is the extent of my 9-months-pregnant brain’s creativity for now!
